Lock Laces® Ambassador Kevin King Competes in 2018 Australian Open

Lock Laces® Ambassador Kevin King Competes in 2018 Australian Open

Melbourne, January 16, 2018 -- Yesterday Kevin King, 26-year-old, American professional tennis player from Peachtree City, Georgia, and Lock Laces® ambassador achieved his long-term goal of playing in the Australian Open. His impressive performance against the 15th seeded, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France, in Margaret Court Arena is grasping the attention of tennis fans and experts. However, Kevin’s journey to the Australian Open resonates with all athletes.

Sean Ferreira, who has coached Kevin nearly his whole life said, “Kevin has truly started believing in his talents and understanding that he can compete at the highest level. More than anything, this has helped him play more aggressive and offensive which has enabled him to win big matches.”

In the days leading up to his first Grand Slam, King had to win three matches in the qualifying rounds of the Australian Open. Every single match was a close battle against quality opponents. The matches were nearly back to back giving King minimal time to recover. After winning the final qualifying match against Australian native, John-Patrick Smith, King had little time to celebrate before his first round match against Tsonga.

The opportunity to play in Margaret Court Arena was a career highlight for King but, he approached the match with poise and maturity. It was hard to tell that this was King’s first Grand Slam. Although he had just played three consecutive matches in the Australian heat, King did not appear fatigued. King approached the match with the same mentality and strategy as he did in his previous matches.

“He played believing in his talents and trusted his tools,” said coach Ferreira. “He has a powerful left-handed serve, a strong forehand and plays the whole court.”

King fell to Tsonga 6-4 6-4 6-1, but he proved that he could compete amongst the world's best. The Georgia Tech grad sponsored by Lock Laces® gave Tsonga a fierce battle. This was the first time many people across the entire world watched Kevin King compete; however, his story leading up to the match is impressive.

A little over a year ago, King was recovering from double hip surgery and was ranked over 800 in the world. This past year, he has focused on getting healthy and is now knocking on the door of the ATP World top 200.

During this past summer’s ATP Challenger in Cary, NC, Kevin tried Lock Laces® for the first time. King traded in his traditional shoelaces for the original no-tie elastic shoelaces. He agreed to become a brand ambassador and went on to win six consecutive matches and his first Challenger Event Title.

King wore his Lock Laces® during the entire Australian Open. The laces withstood the intensity, heat, humidity, and abuse of one of the most high-level tournaments in the world. He never had to stop to tie or adjust his shoes.

King explains that Lock Laces® are perfect for tennis because they add support and always remain tight during matches. They move with an athlete at top speed and in every direction. The water-resistant laces ensure that shoes never become loose due to precipitation, sweat or a humid climate. At the same time, the elastic in the advanced lacing system allows the foot to expand during long matches naturally. This provides an athlete with non-stop comfort.

The Australian Open marks a new beginning for Lock Laces® and Kevin’s career. With his competitive spirit, King will continue to emerge onto the world’s professional tennis scene in 2018.
